In this blogpost, we will solve the age-old question "Are carbs the enemy?" or more specifically, "Do carbs prevent or help weight loss?"
According to food marketing claims & social media heresay; rumour has it that carbs are a health-conscious person’s nemesis.
But…. maybe we should remain more open-minded about carbs???
Are there good carbs and bad carbs?
Is it true that carbs can actually help with my weight loss goals?!?!
If you find yourself confused about carbs, you are not the only one!
Join-me, if you will, on this mind-opening carbohydrate enlightenment journey!
We often think of white breads & fatty pastries when we think of carbs, but did you know that in fact, carbs also include healthy foods like corn, bananas, whole grains & fruit?
Carbs are the body's main source for “fuel”, needed for energy. The central nervous system, kidneys, brain, & muscles (including heart) need carbohydrates to function properly.
Someone who doesn’t eat the right amount of carbs may experience symptoms such as fatigue, nutritional deficiencies, constipation & even bad breath!
Oh ok, so you’ve convinced me that carbs are good, so in other words, if I go and gorge on an extra large plate of spaghetti with garlic bread, I should do so guilt-free????
Not necessarily. You need to be eating the right AMOUNT of carbs. Too little or too many carbs are both not a good thing. If you eat too many carbs, with not enough protein or fat, you will need to eat wayyy more calories to feel full.
So, how do we know what this so-called “right” amount of carbs is?
Ok, pay attention, I'm about to de-mystify everything about carbs...
It is most important to be following a diet with the appropriate macronutrient ratio.
You need to be eating the right proportion of carbs, fat & protein.
According to studies, there exists an ideal ratio for weight loss, since this particular ratio contributes the most efficiently to feeling full:
Ideally choose the least processed carbohydrate, in order to benefit from all of the nutrients.
I truly hope this information was helpful to you!
